All about Gottman Method Couples Therapy

Q: How is Gottman Method different from other styles of couples therapy?

A: The Gottman Method is based on decades of research on the factors that impact relationships.  It is both skills based and dyadic.  This means that the goal is to teach you to use the skills that will ensure healthy communication and deepened connection between you and your partner. The ultimate goal is to make your therapist obsolete!

Q: Why is the assessment phase so long?

A:  We want to make sure that we are addressing the correct factors when we start your therapy.  You would not want your doctor to start a treatment regimen without a thorough work-up!  This gives you the greatest probability of success.

Q: What if I am uncomfortable talking about my emotions?

A: This is very common.  Some of the core skills we work on are how to manage experiencing difficult emotions and practice talking to your partner about your emotions. It may be uncomfortable at first, but it will create a wonderful way to connect with your partner and ensure that your needs are being met.

Q:  Are there couples that should not engage in couples therapy?

A: In general, most couples will benefit from Gottman Method Couples Therapy.  It can improve conflict management, build positive sentiment towards your partner, and deepen fondness and admiration of one another.  Whether you have specific issues to address or just normative levels of couples stress, this therapy can be quite useful.  There are a few situations in which couples therapy is contraindicated.  This is typically when there is an issue of safety or an issue of honesty in the relationship.  The therapy cannot work if there are secrets in the relationship.

Q: How long will we need to do this?

A:  Every couple is different, so it is hard to give an exact timeframe.  You will know you are ready to leave therapy when you feel you can practice the skills on your own without your therapist prompting you.  That’s right, you decide when you feel ready!  You are in charge of the pace, frequency, and length of your treatment.  Your therapist will act as a guide and make suggestions based on years of practice.
